I first purchased this watch new in 1994 when it was the 2nd least cool Rolex stainless steel sports watch to own after the Air King. I was living and working in NYC, riding the subway everyday, and wanted a Rolex for me rather than to impress others.
I can even remember most of the conversation with the Tourneau salesman:
Me: What is that with the white dial?
SA: That is the Explorer II with a Polar dial.
Me: May I try it on?
SA: You are a young guy, you should have a Submariner Date.
