Turning down a stem and rethreading it?

WatchUSeek Watch Forums WatchUSeek Watch Forums

I am working on a 1950s Vostok watch with a 2414 movement.
The stem has been broken (the crown got smacked on something) and I cannot find the correct replacement, so I bought a stem extender and plan to machine down the old stem, thread it with a screw plate and then add the stem extender to get the correct length.
I plan to heat the end of the stem to red hot and then cool it slowly in hopes of annealing it.
What do you think my chances of success is regarding the hardness of the stem…
