I've been obsessed with a specific problem for the better part of two years.
The lever escapement — Mudge's 1754 invention — is arguably the most consequential mechanism in the history of portable timekeeping. The detached lever solved the problem of isochronism more elegantly than anything before it. The pallet fork, the impulse pin, the safety action — every element is doing exactly one job and doing it without redundancy.
