I don't understand why a watch would have this shape. My friend thinks that it might be a bookmark, but the tails are a little too thick for that. What is this kind of watch called?

I first saw this when i was in 5, 6 grade and couldn’t afford the $200 or so price tag. I recently grabbed one for about $60 on the bay.
I wonder how Fossil contracted to get titanium parts made up for the watch, being much harder to machine and work with than typical steels.
