Second hand moves backwards

I bought a vintage Hamilton dateline A-585 here on the site a few months ago, and I've noticed that when I'm changing the time backwards, the second hand also moves backwards, (which creates an interesting alternative to hacking).
Is this normal activity?
Is this damaging the movement?
And how does this happen?
