Real world reliability – Automatic/mechanical vs Quartz

I’ve heard it said many times that you can’t depend on a quartz watch because the battery could die, therefore mechanical watches are more reliable

I’ve also heard it said that mechanical watches require frequent service, and could drop dead at any moment because they are so fragile

I only been into watches for a year or two, so I don’t have long term experience to back up either claim. My quartz and autos are all still functioning like new.
