Gifting a Watch This Holiday Season: A Gift Guide That Gets It Right

Bob's Watches Bob's Watches

A watch is one of the best gifts you can give, as long as it fits the person’s wrist, wardrobe, and the moment you’re marking. The budget decides whether that means a fashion watch, an entry-level pre-owned luxury watch, or a Rolex model. The paperwork and the shipping date matter just as much as the model.

Key takeaways

  • Choose for their life, not your taste: wrist size, wardrobe, and how they’ll actually wear it.
  • Three budget tiers cover almost everyone: fashion, entry luxury under $10,000, and pre-owned luxury above it.
  • The same money buys more watches on the pre-owned market than at current retail, and certain references are generally considered to hold value.
  • December is the busiest month of the year, so order with the shipping cutoff in mind, and keep the exchange window open.

I’ve spent a long time on the dealer’s side of this transaction, and the sold data from our pre-owned luxury watches tells a clearer story than any gift-guide list. Here’s how I’d think it through.

Why A Watch Makes A Good Gift

Two Tone Rolex Datejust Watch Worn on Wrist in a Blue Suit

A watch makes a good gift because it’s a rare object you use every day, and it still carries meaning. Most presents are either practical or sentimental. A watch can be both, and it tends to stick around long after the person forgets what else they unwrapped that year.

A watch given as a gift says that someone’s time is worth marking. That’s why they cluster around the big moments: a graduation, a promotion, a wedding, a milestone birthday. The person wears the occasion on their wrist, and every time they check the time, you’re there. I don’t think there’s another gift that works quite that way.

How To Choose A Watch For Someone Else

Vintage Rolex Submariner Watch Worn on Wrist in Casual Clothing

Choosing a watch for someone else comes down to two questions, and I’d guess they’re the same three gift buyers ask us most often every December: Will it fit their wrist? Does it fit in with how they dress?

Match the watch to their life, not to the catalog.

Start with what they already wear. Someone in a suit five days a week may want a slim dress piece or a watch from the Datejust collection, not a 44mm diver. Someone who surfs, cooks, and never irons a shirt will get more out of a Rolex Submariner or a Tudor Black Bay than a Cartier Tank. The watch has to survive their actual week.

The mistake is buying the watch you want. Look at their current watch, their phone case, their shoes. People are consistent. Buy for the person in front of you.

Get the size right without asking.

You don’t need to measure their wrist. You need to know what already fits.

  • Note the Rolex case size they already wear comfortably. It’s usually printed in the brand’s product listing, and it’s the single most useful number you can have.
  • As a rough guide, cases from 36mm to 41mm suit most men’s wrists, 26mm to 36mm suit most women’s, and plenty of people cross those lines on purpose.
  • A bracelet can be sized before the watch ships.
  • If the person wears a leather strap, sizing matters less. Straps are forgiving.

Quartz, automatic, or does it matter for a gift?

For most gifts, it doesn’t. A quartz watch runs on a battery. An automatic winds itself with wrist motion and is what most enthusiasts mean when they talk about a real watch. If the person already owns an automatic, stay with automatic. If they’ve never worn one, a quartz Cartier Tank is no less a Cartier.

Surprise them or involve them.

My opinion: surprise a first-time buyer, involve a collector. Someone who has never owned a luxury watch will be thrilled by whatever well-chosen piece comes out of the box. Someone with a watch box already has a list in their head, and the odds of guessing it are not great. Enthusiasts on watch forums say the same thing, usually with some feeling.

The middle path works well. Narrow it to two watches you’d be happy to give, then let them pick. You keep most of the surprise and lose all of the risk.

The Best Watches To Gift This Holiday, By Budget And Recipient

Tudor Black Bay GMT

The best gift watches are the ones people actually buy, so I built these picks from our own sales data rather than a wish list, grouped them into three categories based on budget and recipient.

Entry luxury gifts under $10,000

Watch Bob’s average sold price (as of Oct 2026)
Tudor Black Bay $4,197
Cartier Tank Must $3,971
OMEGA Seamaster $5,421
OMEGA Speedmaster $7,461
Rolex Datejust 36 $9,211

The Tudor Black Bay is the watch I’d hand a twenty-five-year-old who has never owned anything mechanical. It looks like a serious dive watch because it is one. The Tank Must is the opposite answer to the same question, a quartz dress watch that will outlast several wardrobes. The Seamaster and the Speedmaster are the two OMEGAs everyone recognizes, and the Speedmaster has a moon story attached for anyone who likes a story. And the Datejust 36, especially an older reference like the 16233, is the most giftable Rolex: it fits almost any wrist and almost any shirt.

Luxury watch gifts for him

Watch Bob’s average sold price (as of Oct 2026)
Rolex Datejust 41 ref. 126334 $15,370
Rolex Submariner Date ref. 126610 $15,964
Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 126710 $22,495
Rolex Daytona ref. 116500 $30,859

The Datejust 41 with the fluted bezel is the larger version of the Rolex Datejust 36, and it’s the one I’d pick for a man who wears a jacket most days. The Submariner is the default answer for everyone else, and there’s nothing wrong with the default when it’s this good. The GMT-Master II earns its place for anyone who travels, since the second time zone is useful rather than decorative. The Daytona is the gift for a milestone that deserves a bigger number, and the steel 116500 is the Daytona reference that shows up most often in our sold data.

Gift watches for her and the first luxury watch

Watch Bob’s average sold price (as of Oct 2026)
Rolex Lady Datejust $9,861
Cartier Ballon Bleu $9,863
Cartier Panthère $10,262
Rolex Datejust 31 $14,680

Our data shows that Lady Datejust watches are the women’s Rolex that our customers want, and an older two-tone example like the 69173 keeps the price well under the category average while still being unmistakably a Rolex. Cartier owns the dress-watch conversation for women: the Ballon Bleu if she likes something round and soft, the Panthère if she likes something that reads as jewelry first. The Datejust 31 is the step up, a little more wrist presence without going to a men’s size. For a first luxury watch, any of these four is a safe bet; the Lady Datejust is the safest.

For the collector who has everything

Skip the current catalog. A collector with a full box doesn’t need another steel sports watch; they need something with a year on it. Vintage is where I’d look: a 1970s Datejust, an early Rolex Explorer, a Speedmaster from before the current case.

The trade-off is that vintage demands more of the buyer, which is exactly why it appeals to collectors. Our vintage watches page is sorted by era, and if the person is a Rolex loyalist, our pre-owned Rolex page covers all Rolex watches we have in stock.

Shopping Pre-owned Rolex Models

Rolex Datejust 126300

If you’re shopping for a Rolex watch, finding one available at an authorized dealer can be challenging. That’s where the pre-owned market comes in. Buying pre-owned allows you to purchase a Rolex without the wait, and at Bob’s Watches, you’ll also enjoy free insured overnight shipping. If you’re looking to give a Rolex as a gift this holiday season, here are a few models worth considering.

Watch Bob’s average sold price (as of Oct 2026)
Rolex Datejust 41 ref. 126334 $15,370
Rolex Submariner Date ref. 126610 $15,964
Rolex GMT-Master II ref. 126710 $22,495

A nice added bonus when buying a Rolex is the fact that some references retain their value. Certain references, such as the Submariner and the GMT-Master II, can hold value well over time; that depends on scarcity, condition, demand, and whether it still comes with the box and papers. No watch guarantees a profit, and you shouldn’t buy a gift expecting one.

Making Sure It Is The Real Thing

Service Your Rolex

A gifted luxury watch should arrive as advertised. For some timepieces, that might include items such as its box, warranty card or papers, etc. That’s the short version. Here’s why I’m firm about it.

Every watch that comes through Bob’s Watches goes through an authentication process before it ever reaches a customer.  The authentication process includes a number of important checks to ensure the watch is authentic and properly running. We do this because the watch is only worth what it claims to be, and the recipient has no way to know otherwise.

What Sells In December: A Dealer’s View Of Holiday Demand And What It Means For You

Rolex Lady Datejust

December is our busiest month, and it’s busy in a particular way: smaller watches and classic Rolex models take a bigger share of what sells, while the sports watches that dominate the rest of the year ease off a little. Last year in December alone these watches accounted for 12.7 percent of our completed transactions, up from a monthly average of about 8.3 percent.

My read on that: the holiday buyer is often buying for someone else, and someone else is more likely to be a wife, a daughter, or a parent than a fellow collector. The gift tends to be a Datejust in some size, not a Daytona.

If there’s a lesson for a gift buyer, it’s this: the watches that move in December are the easiest to give. A 26mm Lady Datejust or a 34mm Date doesn’t need a conversation about wrist size or dive ratings. It needs a box and a bow. The Christmas watch that gets worn is usually the simpler one.

“A luxury watch makes a special holiday gift because it’s something the recipient can enjoy every day for years to come. We see a lot of customers choosing classic Rolex models like the Datejust and Submariner during the holiday season because they’re timeless, versatile, and appeal to a wide range of tastes. The key is choosing a watch that fits the person’s lifestyle, not just the occasion.”

Getting It There In Time, Sized, And With A Way Back

Rolex Datejust Watch on Wrist with Suit Sitting

Order early, size it before it ships, and keep the exchange window open. Every December, I see the same problems: orders placed too late, bracelets nobody thought to size, and watches the recipient loved but that didn’t fit.

  1. Order by the cutoff. Overnight shipping exists, but keep in mind that there is a cut off to receiving the watch next day.
  2. Give us the wrist size if you have it. If you know the case size of a watch they already wear, or their wrist measurement, we can help size the bracelet before it ships.
  3. Keep the paperwork together. The warranty card, the receipt, and any dealer warranty go in the box, not in your email.

Frequently Asked Questions

In some Chinese and Russian traditions, the superstition holds that a clock or watch given as a present counts down the recipient’s remaining time. The usual remedy is for the recipient to hand back a coin so the watch becomes a purchase rather than a gift.

The three watch rule is an enthusiast’s shorthand for a complete collection: one dress watch, one sports watch, and one everyday watch that can do a bit of both. It isn’t a rule so much as a useful way to spot the gap in someone’s box before you buy them a fourth of the same thing.

Saying something short about why you chose it beats anything about the watch itself. Name the occasion, say what you noticed about them that led you to this one, and let the watch do the rest.

You can exchange a gifted watch bought from Bob’s Watches within our return window. Keep the paperwork with the watch so the recipient can handle it without you.

A pre-owned watch is an entirely acceptable gift, it’s often the only way to put the watch under the tree this year instead of on a waitlist. It arrives inspected, with its papers.

The Best Watches To Gift Are The Ones That Fit The Person

OMEGA Speedmaster Watch With Black Dial on a Table

If I had to compress this whole guide into a sentence, it’s that one. Fit covers the wrist, the wardrobe, and the occasion, and when all three line up, the brand almost takes care of itself. Get the size from a watch they already wear, pick the tier your budget supports, and ask for the papers.

That’s also why we do what we do at Bob’s Watches. Every watch on our pre-owned luxury watches pages has been through our authentication process before it reaches you, and if the watch you want to give is a Rolex, pre-owned is usually the way to have it in hand before December runs out. Happy holidays.
