NATO straps for civilians – overkill?

So we know that one of the benefits of a NATO is that, in the event of a spring bar failure, the strap will hold the watch securely by the other spring bar. But has anyone here actually experienced this issue in day to day life? Like it makes sense for a rough environment like a deployed soldier, but for the rest of us it just doesn't seem like it would ever really be an issue to worry about. I know I've never had a spring bar failure that caused my watch to fall off, but I'm only one guy…
