Modern PVD coating, long term wear?

I am curious, how good is modern pvd technology?

Has anyone had experience with modern pvd coating over a few years or so? In particular gold tone PVD.

I hear it is way better than plating tech back in the day, and thin plates of real gold is a lot softer than modern gold tone pvd.

Apart from deep scratches, has anyone seen actual gold pvd wear through to the case?

Strictly speaking basic pvd coating, not the ice hardened and diamond-like stuff
