How much % of the price is accountable to advertising and brand recognition?

I have a friend with a similar tic for watches as I do. The difference between us is that he goes for cheaper watcher while I have a penchant for watches which are more expensive ( predominately bought " pre-owned" ) in the medium segment.

He keeps telling me that he wants no part in paying for the advertising or brand recognition cachet and that he is quite happy to dig out the pearls that he thinks can be bought for a song among the lesser known watches.
