If you’re looking at this watch, you probably already know that the matte dial 5-series variants are considered by many to be the last of the vintage breed. This was the last model before Rolex transitioned to the glossy dials with applied indices. As a result, the matte dial retains the vintage charm of the first subs, but adds versatility and daily usability by way of using sapphire crystal and employing the 3035 movement that had the quick-set date feature.
Overall the watch is in excellent condition. The case laser welded and re-cut, giving it a virtually new look. Short of a few scruffs, the watch looks as if it was just purchased in ’83. Beneath the dial, the movement is equally impressive. Having been just serviced it is beating with a very healthy amplitude of well over 300 degrees. As can be seen, it comes complete on an oyster bracelet sizable to a 7.5 in wrist, box, manual, and a punched but unfilled out certificate.
An amazing set that doesn’t appear very often on the market.
