Building project: floor height

TZ-UK Forums TZ-UK Forums oliverte

Hi TZ

We’ve nearly finished a 30sqm extension adjoining our existing dining room.

Brief to the builders was for the finished floor to be flat with existing floor (we were planning on tiling extension, whereas existing dining room has a wooden floor)

Builders have laid the screed and it’s up to height of the existing wooden floor. Therefore, once tiles laid, you’re talking a 10mm height difference.

I’ve informed building company I’m not happy, I think they will try and push me to accept the screed as is and put an edging trim to mask the obvious gap.

I think i have the following options
1. Accept the difference, it’s only 10mm
2. Go for a thinner flooring option, lino, microcement topper, etc
3. Get them to re-lay the screed to proper height

Obviously if we cannot agree I have the option of small claims court.

Collective wisdom of TZ – what are your thoughts?
