Definitions. What if the difference between a field watch and a pilots watch?

I often see these terms interchanged and wondered if there is a formal or accepted definition of either or both …

Seems to me they share pretty much all the same characteristics…

– easy to read
– black dial with Arabic numerals
– lumed hands
– no dive bezel
– robust
– decent water resistant
– some level of military heritage

So what defines the two and are they effectively two descriptions of the same thing?
