The Vacheron Constantin Overseas did not begin life as one of this Genevan manufacture’s classic watches. In fact, it took this sporty watch many years to reach the status it enjoys today. That evolution is exactly what makes the Vacheron Constantin Overseas 30th anniversary worth celebrating.
The role of the Vacheron Constantin 222 (1977-1985)
The Vacheron Constantin Overseas history dates back to 1996, but it is important to the understanding of this watch to know about the 222 model, which was named for the 222nd anniversary of this manufacture’s long existence. Produced in stainless steel, gold, and two-tone steel and gold versions in 34 and 37 mm sizes, it arrived in 1977. It is considered by all experts – including those inside Vacheron Constantin – as the predecessor to the Overseas collection.
Though the Overseas would take on a life of its own, the 222, powered by automatic Caliber 1121 (based on a development specifically for Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet by Jaeger-LeCoultre), was the seed from which it grew. As an aside, Jaeger-LeCoultre never used this movement in any of its own watches. Caliber 1121 however also powered Patek Philippe’s Nautilus (as Caliber 28-255) and continued to do so until the mid-1980s.
The 222 was produced until 1985. In the year 2022 (!) Vacheron Constantin brought out a limited-edition Historiques 222, a contemporary reedition of the original 1977 Jumbo edition in a 37 mm yellow gold case and bracelet. This edition was powered by in-house automatic Caliber 2455/2, and only limited quantities have been made for boutique-only sales thus far. In January of 2025, a stainless-steel version arrived.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas I: 1996-1999
The first generation of the Vacheron Constantin Overseas stainless-steel luxury sports watch was introduced in 1996, with the collection’s chronograph making its overdue appearance in 1999.
The first Overseas model, arriving in a classically sized 37 mm case, was powered by Caliber 1310, which was based on Girard-Perregaux Caliber 3100. Two more sizes – 35 mm and 24 mm – were subsequently offered. The chronograph of 1999 was powered by the Frédéric Piguet-based automatic Caliber 1137.
A new generation of sporty casual watches was thus created, ready to take on others of its ilk such as the venerable Audemars Piguet Royal Oak. The great recognition expected for this line of sporty watches remained subdued, however, and Vacheron Constantin’s management decided to launch a new, improved, and above all larger Overseas in tune with turn-of-the-century times.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas II: 2004-2016
In 2004, Vacheron Constantin relaunched its contemporary luxury sports watch.
“This launch was quite controversial,” Christian Selmoni, who was freshly part of the team in charge of the relaunch at the time, remembered while talking to me about it in 2016. “Shifting [the case size] from 37 to 42.5 mm really made it a different watch.”
The most apparent changes occurred visually, particularly in the new, more masculine dimensions of the chronograph case at 42 mm. The case remained angular though soft thanks to the interplay of the brushed parts and satin-finished bezel reminiscent of the shape of Vacheron Constantin’s hallmark Maltese cross. One of the most stunning outward differences was certainly the new, skillfully redesigned bracelet whose satiny links were also shaped like half Maltese crosses.
Parallel to the masculine models in stainless steel, Vacheron Constantin introduced a new female-oriented Overseas, a 34 mm version with a silver-plated guilloché-patterned or natural mother-of-pearl dial.
Although they were not visible through the specially engraved, closed, Overseas case backs of this era, the calibers powering these models were made by highly reputable movement makers. Vacheron Constantin’s Caliber 1137 powered the chronograph, an aesthetic mechanism based on Frédéric Piguet’s classic 1185 caliber. The men’s three-hand watch with date was powered by Caliber 1126, based on a mechanism manufactured by Jaeger-LeCoultre. The women’s Overseas model was powered by quartz Caliber 1207.
Back in 2004, the Overseas was not Vacheron Constantin’s focus collection, but management wanted that to change.
Vacheron Constantin Overseas III: 2016-present
At the 2016 SIHH (today’s Watches and Wonders), Vacheron Constantin relaunched again, adding in-house movements, a reworked bracelet, and a very intelligent, easy-to-use strap-change system.
“Even if the Overseas II was still successful – we have produced about 60,000 pieces of this collection over the course of its 20-year history – we still had some improvements to make,” Selmoni, who is now Vacheron Constantin’s heritage and style director, explained at the time. “The most obvious improvement was in the movements: we were still using some external movements in this collection, and Vacheron Constantin’s strategy is now to have 100 percent in-house movements for mechanical watches. Overseas was the last collection to be upgraded, and that was the key reason for this third generation.”
As this fabled watch reached its 20th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin finally reached its goal of 100 percent in-house movements.
“We tried to simplify and balance the design, getting back to the feel of the 222,” Selmoni explained. This excellent sporty casual timepiece was made even better with the addition of not only in-house movements, but also the intelligent strap-change system and – for a lot of wearers, importantly – the reworked bracelet.
“We wanted something that was a mix between the Overseas I bracelet and that of the Overseas II. The challenge with an evolution is to bring something new without ‘breaking’ the design that came before,” Selmoni continued. “We ‘improved’ the luxurious feeling but kept the same construction. The links are now very complicated to manufacture.”
The designers at Vacheron Constantin overhauled a few different points. “The Overseas was already successful, but at the same time its design was quite rooted in the 2000s: bulky and ‘brutal,’ if I may describe it that way,” Selmoni explained. “We thought it would be nice to reconnect this collection more with where we come from. So we have recreated the link between today and the historical pieces, which is challenging because with a new generation there is certainly a moment where people don’t really appreciate what you have done.”
A lot of this means that some of the new codes included finishes and design flourishes from the early days of the Overseas, which Selmoni said at the time was ambitious.
Later that year, a fantastic worldtimer called the Overseas World Time was introduced, which has appeared in a few different references and remained beloved.
2019-present
These days, Vacheron Constantin regularly releases new Overseas models, so that the Overseas collection now includes pretty much every complication, including a tourbillon model in various colors and metals, high-jewelry variations, an ultra-thin perpetual calendar, and even a model called the Overseas Grand Complication Openface, which includes a minute repeater, perpetual calendar, and tourbillon.
One standout model is 2019’s Vacheron Constantin Overseas Dual Time release, which has since appeared in a few different variations, including 2026’s brand-new titanium-encased Overseas Dual Time Cardinal Points.
Noteworthy is also the fact that as of 2023 Vacheron Constantin has once again introduced smaller yet fully automatic Overseas models in 34-35 mm cases.
The upshot is that after 30 years, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas collection has evolved to an amazing place, making it well worth the attention of any watch-interested buyer
