This is an invented story, but I like to think there may be some truth behind it.
Two thousand years ago, a Marine — miles classiarius — of the Roman fleet, after years of raids and campaigns across the Mediterranean — Mare Nostrum — retired to private life in Tunisia. It is hard to say whether he settled there because he originally came from those lands, because of the love of a woman, or simply because he fell in love with the place itself. Who knows?
