Look out, it’s another ‘What car?’ thread

Following on from the car crash thread, my (20 y/o) son needs a new car. His commute is 250+ miles per week, and he’s spending quite a lot on petrol. Man maths calculated that the petrol money could be funding an EV. The problem with that is that we’re in the process of moving house, and don’t want to spend money on an EV charging point, and would wait until after the move before changing his car. Events have obviously changed the plan. Anyway, that points towards a plug-in hybrid, but unless he was rigorous about 3 pin charging every night, he’d end up using petrol anyway. There seems to be a price premium on plug-in hybrids as well, when compared to their ICE equivalents, so the current thinking is to run a diseasel for a year, and then transition to an EV.

For me at least, the key consideration is reliabilty. From his POV, it needs at least a veneer of sexiness, so no Citroen C3 Picassos, for example.

Excluding ‘premium’ priced cars like VW and Audi, I’m thinking Ford Focus, Honda Civic or maybe Skoda Octavia (if that’s not too grown up). Vauxhall Astras look good value, but I personally have a bit of a mental block with Vauxhall and don’t really know if they’re any good or not.

Any real world experience of similar cars, and what to avoid?
