Arnold & Son’s Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 is a remarkable timepiece that pays homage to the brand’s rich horological heritage while showcasing modern watchmaking prowess. This exquisite watch is a tribute to John Arnold’s groundbreaking pocket chronometer No. 1/36, also known as the “Arnold 36,” which was created in 1778 and set new standards for precision timekeeping.
Design and Construction
The Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 features a striking open-worked dial that reveals the intricate mechanics of the movement. The watch’s architecture is a study in symmetry, with the following key elements:
•A large 46mm case available in 18-karat red gold, stainless steel, or stainless steel with anthracite DLC coating (gunmetal version)
•A skeletonized dial showcasing the movement’s complexity
•A one-minute tourbillon positioned between 4 and 5 o’clock
•A small seconds subdial symmetrically placed between 7 and 8 o’clock
•Thirteen multilevel, triangular bridges that provide a three-dimensional depth to the timepiece
Movement
At the heart of this masterpiece lies the in-house developed Calibre A&S8600:
•Manually wound movement
•COSC-certified chronometer
•90-hour power reserve provided by a double barrel system
•4Hz (28,800 vph) frequency
•33 jewels
•Exquisite finishing including sand-blasted main plate and bridges with chamfered and polished edges.
Haute Horlogerie Finishing
The Tourbillon Chronometer No. 36 exemplifies fine watchmaking with its meticulous attention to detail:
•Main plate and bridges treated with golden coating, echoing historical pocket watches
•Mirror-polished 18k gold chatons set in the main plate
•Circular satin-finished wheels with chamfered and polished edges
•Beveled screws with mirror-polished heads
•Three-spoke tourbillon cage design, a signature of Arnold & Son
Nice Christmas treat 🙂
