Teach me about Fit and Finish

My wonderful spouse is giving me a watch for my birthday. Of course she’s letting me pick it out. I’m not sure what her budget it but I’m guessing we’ll be looking in the $1,500 to $2,500 range.

I’ve alreday done some shopping, we live in a rural area, but I did go into the “big city” last month and tried on watches in that price range, and even higher.

My only points of reference for new, medium quality watches are my Seiko GMT and my Bulova Hack. Neither of these watches are in that…

POLL: Would You Sell To Or Buy From…

A recent thread got me to thinking about how my fellow WUS members feel about trusting new members when it comes to buying/selling watches here. I don’t buy or sell much here, maybe half a dozen times or so in ten years, so I’m interested in hearing if the members that do frequent the for sale sections would trust a brand new member who has little or no post history and no transaction history as far as a buyer/seller. Comments that support your choice are welcome!

Why Rolex?

Why Rolex? I just don’t get it.

As I sit here wearing my Glashütte CQ Panorama Date, I can’t help but wonder — why do people spend so much money on Rolex? I get it — it’s a great tool watch. But that’s all it is.

If you have a vintage Rolex and you l…

Miyota 9039 vs Sellita SW-200

I’m considering purchasing a couple micro brand watches that use the Miyota movement but also considering a Christopher Ward that has the Sellita movement. I’m sure the Sellita is a better movement, but in your opinion, is it worth spending an addition…

Revelation: If importing a watch worth over $X, then may as well take a trip to the seller’s country

Rationale is that the import duties and taxes would almost pay for the cost of the trip. So greatly subsidized, the trip is really worth it!

(Of course, maybe technically some countries require you to declare the watch on the way home, but what’s to prevent someone from wearing a Casio on the way out, and the luxury timepiece on the way back 😏)

For the US or Canada, I would put that X value around $5-6k. Obviously X depends on a number of factors:

  • Country importing…

Stay Away from a Miyota 82S5 Movement?

I’m considering buying a Draken Aoraki, but the movement – a Miyota 82S5 – is holding me back. It hacks and handwinds, and Draken has put it in a Faraday cage for 20,000 A/m magnetism protection, but I’ve heard that it’s often less accurate than the NH35 and it may be difficult to service, as least compared to the NH35. I’ve also heard that Miyota’s Parashock system isn’t as good as Seiko’s Diashock.

I’ll be using this as a legit field watch – wearing it for hiking, which I do regularly…

Looking the right watch box

Hello all,

I’m searching for a watch box but can’t seem to find exactly what I want. Maybe they don’t make them the way I’m looking for, or maybe I’m not searching in the right places. Either way, I’m not sure, so I turn to you fine folks for help.

I’ve realized I don’t want a box with watch rolls to wrap the watches around—I know it’s a small detail, but I just don’t like them. I’d rather have a box where the watches can lay flat on their straps. I have a travel case like this that I…
