Rolex was founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England. The company initially operated as Wilsdorf & Davis, but the name was changed to Rolex in 1908. The exact origin of the name is unclear, but it is believed to have been chosen because it was easy to pronounce in many languages and sounded like a watch winding.

Rolex moved its operations to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919, and it was in this same year that they introduced the first Rolex wristwatch with a date function, called the Rolex Oyster Perpetual. The Oyster Perpetual was also the first waterproof watch, and it quickly gained popularity among athletes and adventurers for its durability and reliability.

Throughout the 20th century, Rolex continued to innovate and expand its product line, introducing iconic models like the Rolex Submariner (1953), the Rolex Daytona (1963), the Rolex GMT-Master (1954), and others involving mechanical watch models. 

Today, Rolex is one of the most recognizable luxury watch brands in the world, known for its quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. The company is still headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, and remains privately owned.
