The Conclave of Cardinals in Rome elected a new pontiff: Robert Cardinal Prevost, who took the name Pope Leo XIV. Although an American originally from Chicago, Pope Leo spent two decades in Peru (and also holds citizenship there), and many years at the Vatican in several leadership roles. Leo holds a degree in mathematics from Villanova University (near Philadelphia), and a Masters in Theology. He is also an avid tennis player.

I wish the new Pope success in his difficult future endeavors.

Lately, I’ve been trying out several AI (Artificial Intelligence) apps with great results. I’ve downloaded ChatGTP, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Perplexity, and Claude.

I have found they can perform massive legwork across the internet that would take me hours or days to do, but with better and very succinct results.

Even questions like "How long can humanity survive the growing problems of climate change, world population growth, and water shortages?" can result in thorough analyses of the issues and eye-opening estimates.

My favourite app has been Gemini.

…mid-range Motorola Edge 2024. My Note 20 is four years old now and getting a bit long in the tooth. This Edge has a newer and faster Snapdragon 7 Gen 2 CPU, a 6.6" display, and double the storage capacity. Basically, I was just getting bored with my old Note and wanted to buy a new phone. :friendly_wink:

Prior to this week the Edge was selling for $599. Today it’s selling for $299 less a new $50 discount, less a $125 trade-in for my Note 20, for a net cost to me of $125.

Living in San Diego we’re about 120 miles south of the wildfire apocalypse destroying L.A. However the climate/weather conditions are the same here and we are under a wildfire warning. We survived two large, scary wildfires in 2003 and 2007. Unlike then, I am completely unable to now plan and execute a home evacuation of myself, my wife, and my one year-old dog, considering that I am a 77 year-old 100% disabled and immobile old prick who is in need of hospice services.

My wife and I are discussing a run to Arizona with a loaded SUV to escape the calamity. Sounds like a possible plan except I don’t think I could survive such a trek (i.e., I am completely unable to help pack, load, or unpack anything). I’m going to call the VA in the morning to see if they would be able to put me up for a week, while my wife and dog run for the hills.

What else should I be thinking about?
