A few days ago, I was admiring my favorite watch during a meeting at work and noticed a small ding on one of the lugs. I have no idea how it got there… probably just daily wear, nothing "memorable". It's on the inside edge of a lug (facing me). Initially, I was quite disappointed… within about half an hour, I realized it's not a big deal but was still annoyed.

It did get me to thinking… are there any "precautions" people take to avoid dings…

I generally keep this always in mind if purchasing a watch… however, something that I think is very important to understand is that on many models, the dial color you see on the website (online retailer) is rarely accurately representative of what you will always see. Maybe obvious, but with some watches more than others. This is particularly important if you cannot see a watch in person because it is rarely sold at ADs or it's from a small watch maker…

Possibly a dumb question, but I was just curious… is it bad for a chronograph if you keep it at a non-zero position purely for asthetic purposes?

Meaning, start the chronograph, have it run about 37 seconds, stop it. Leave the second hand at 37 seconds.

I've occasionally found a few discussions, but it doesn't seem there is anything conclusive. My chronograph has the Omega 3300 movement.
