When cleaning out my late mother-in-law's house, I sifted through many old watches. None of them are particularly valuable, but I know my sister-in-law would like to have and wear one of her mother's watches. The best candidate seemed to be this Timex, which seemed to run, but upon further testing would only run for several hours at a time. I suspect it is a broken mainspring, as when I wind it, it never really stops.

Anyway, I know it's not worth trying to replace components in this type…

I know it's still settling in and it's likely to change over time, but my Murph gained a second the first day i had it, and and bit over a week later it's still hasn't gained another second. I think it might be close to 2 seconds fast after a week. Really kinda hard to read a fraction of a second.

By contrast, my Seiko Turtle, still relatively new is running just shy of +2 a day, which I still think is pretty good. My Bulova Military UHF is very accurate of course, it has only lost a second...

I have a six-watch box that was a gift from my wife when I started "collecting" watches, which I suppose was when I had more than 3. When she gave it to me, she said I need to keep my collection to 6, and while I'm sure I could push back on this, I actually find it useful to limit my collections, and for watches, I find 6 to ba a good number. Even with 6, there tends to be one that doesn't get worn very often, and for me if I am not using a thing, I believe it should be passed on to someone...

I picked this up at an antique store today. It was the only interesting watch-thing in the place. Though I couldn't easily identify a name, it seemed to want to run, and the dial and hands are in excellent condition, but also it was a no-brainer, because the wooden box it came in was easily worth the $10 I paid for it.

It does run, though not super well, so it seems like a reasonably good project to learn watch servicing on. I'll need a key for it and it will eventually need a case...
