This late 80s Motorola ad shows a U.S. Army SCR-536 ‘Handie Talkie’. It was indeed the ancestor to today’s mobile phones, entering wartime duty around 1941 with a short range of around a mile.

Less photogenically but even more important to the war effort, Motorola made a longer-range unit for the company level, the backpack-like SCR-300-A ‘Walkie Talkie’:
