This late 80s Motorola ad shows a U.S. Army SCR-536 ‘Handie Talkie’. It was indeed the ancestor to today’s mobile phones, entering wartime duty around 1941 with a short range of around a mile.

Less photogenically but even more important to the war effort, Motorola made a longer-range unit for the company level, the backpack-like SCR-300-A ‘Walkie Talkie’:

GPS clock with OCXO and timestamping

Following my ‘starter’ GPS clock, I have acquired another from the same makers:

My cost: under $300.

This version foregoes any display but adds an oven controlled quartz oscillator (OCXO). This keeps the XO within a tight temperature band in order to stabilize its rate, both when the clock is autonomous and for the more usual application of correctly subdividing the 1 pulse/second…
