This is my last PSA, as I’m sure you’re all getting bored by now. This modern King Seiko isn’t a very popular model but I personally think this design looks great and the dial is lovely. WatchO are offering this at 50% off the retail price (code: LIMITED). The build quality of King Seiko (SJE models) watches are excellent, some even say approaching that of Grand Seiko. At £3000, it is a lot to ask for, but at £1500, brand new, I think it’s a great deal.

I’ve been thinking lately who actually buys the expensive Seiko watches. Before you say anything, I know we, as watch enthusiasts, do, but that’s not enough for Seiko to justify making the higher end pieces.

I can’t see the layman spending so much on what is effectively "just a Seiko", when there are competitors like Tudor, Tag Heuer, Breitling etc.

Maybe the small subset of people in this hobby is sufficient enough for Seiko. I don’t even see the average person buying a midrange prospex (£1k+ Prospex but not the 8L35 range). It does feel like that if Seiko re-brands it’s higher end range, they would sell more of them.

What are your thoughts?

To my untrained eye, they look the same. They have the same clasp, both 18 ct gold, both 4mm Oval Tube Bangle. As there is such a large price differential, there must be a bigger difference. I assume it would be weight, but, unfortunately, it’s not mentioned on either site. I don’t know much about the jewellery trade, so I dont know if two virtually identical items would likely have different weights.

I would appreciate some input from others. I don’t believe Harper Kendall could sell it at such a cheaper price than goldsmiths, so I do believe that goldsmiths one is worth more. Opinions from someone much more knowledgeable on the subject would be appreciated.

Seiko is going to re-release the new King Seiko VANAC, which has a new 8L45 movement. This appears to be an 8L35 but with a longer power reserve. The price is around what we expect for an SLA series. This is an interesting new release. I quite like it.

What is everyone’s opinion on this?

Nomos has always been a brand that has attracted my interest. Mainly because of their relatively affordable in-house movements that are also very well decorated. Very rarely can you find in-house movements that are also decorated at those prices points.

I see that they value their automatics more than their manual wind watches. Their automatics are usually around £2.5-3k range, whereas their manual winds are around £1.5-2k.

At those price points, they are competing a lot with Seiko, albeit different markets as they don’t offer dive watches.

Regardless, does anyone know, generally, how do their movements compare against Seiko? At their prices, the automatics, quality-wise, should be comparable to the 8L35 and the manual winds should be similar to the 6R movements. However, seeing as Seiko gets a lot of criticism for using 6R movements in their £1k+ watches, then it would be reasonable to assume that Nomos’ manual winds are better quality than the 6R movements?

Even though they both compete in the same price segment, Nomos’ movements usually have Seiko beat on decoration.

Quick question regarding the Rolex for those who have owned both of these watches. Does the Submariner wear larger than the Seiko MM300? I know that the case dimensions of the Seiko MM300 are larger than the Submariner, but the MM300 wears much smaller than its dimensions would suggest. Does the Submariner have the larger dial, making it wear larger than the Seiko?
