I love the design of certain Omega watches.
My daily wearer for a long time has been a battered Speedie Moonwatch I bought at Amsterdam airport
years ago and I wouldn’t be without it.
However, my Rio Olympics Speedmaster went back under warranty because the chronograph function stopped working.
A friend of mine purchased a new Moonwatch a couple of years ago and soon after one of the pushers fell out so it went back to Omega.
Another friend purchased one of the latest co axial Moonwatches and 3 months later that went back because the chronograph function stopped working.
One of my favourite watches has always been the Ploprof,
I have a 2017 steel version. Yesterday I was setting the time and date- using the quick set date function which enables you to wind the hour hand independently. Suddenly the hour hand stuck at 9 o’clock and remained jammed/ broken.
A quick google of this issue soon revealed it’s a well known problem-a weak hour wheel on certain Omega models means instead of using the quick set date function actually it’s best to set the date simply winding forward using the minutes hand – which could take ages. But it begs the question why do Omega sell watches costing several thousand pounds with a known hour wheel weak point?
I now have the chore of getting a new hour wheel and await news from the Omega boutique regarding cost etc.

I accept there will be lots of Omega collectors here who no doubt have never had a problem with their watches going wrong, but the issues my friends and I have had with Omega’s going wrong would indicate quality- especially considering the high retail cost – is not great.
This is in stark contrast to any Rolex I’ve owned over the decades – which have never once had to go back under warranty.
There’s no doubt in my experience that a Submariner is bombproof quality compared to an Omega – but nothing alters the fact a Ploprof is a considerably more interesting choice-just hope I can get it fixed for a sensible price.
