It might just be this particular community, but there are certain watches that seem to be very popular and I just don't get it.

To the point that a number of these watches almost seem to be expected additions to a collection, like people feel obligated to buy them just to fit in, or something. I don't know, and I don't understand it.

Things like the Omega Speedy and/or SMP… I find both to be tragically underwhelming, but they both seem to be quintessential additions to every collection…

It could be a certain type of escapement, a particular movement, a new watch, or even a trend in the world of watches.

There are some cool things happening out there… from the new AP chronograph movement or the Rolex 7135 dynapulse escapement to the glowing Sieko × Bamford watch… what has your attention these days?

Lately, I have been kind of fascinated by movements that are NOT simply Swiss lever escapements. Although, as far movements with Swiss lever escapements go, Arnold & Son's A&S5219 movement definitely deserves honorable mention… a double-barrel, constant force tourbillion with dead-beat seconds. Truly a phenomenal caliber.

I would like to see some interesting watches with oddball functions built into them.

I'm not talking about your typical tachymeters or telemeters, but things like pulsometers and slide rules.

For example, here is the Nodus Obscura watch with a "sunny 16" slide rule for a camera's aperature control (F-stop) and shutter speed.

Chronograph watches have never impressed me.

I think the dials look busy and crowded and hard to read. Honestly, I think chronographs ruin a lot of otherwise good looking watches.

I think 99% of people wearing a chronograph watch never have an actual need to use a chronograph, and the remaining 1% would be better off using a chronograph not built into a watch.

I could be wrong, but it seems ridiculously overrated.
