When I started collecting watches more than 50 years ago it was just a case of liking unusual watches that were different to those that everyone had and I tended to buy something to wear for a few months then sell it and try something else. Then on graduating as an engineer an uncle gave me a (second hand) Rolex which I then used as my only watch for over 25 years before deciding to sell it to start collecting and wearing mechanical alarm watches.
As so often happens this collection rapidly began to expand to include all types of watch as long as it interested me by being a little different and over the years it grew to over 75 different watches. Obviously most of these finished up just sitting in watch boxes or being rotated through a display cabinet in the lounge and were never worn or got out except to be taken to a local watch shop for a clean every 10 years or so.
Having now passed my 75th birthday I have realised (at the prompting of SWMBO) that if I don’t dispose of them soon they will probably just be sent as a job lot to a local auction house when I kick the bucket so it is now time to start a grand rationalisation of the collection.
My plan is to try to get down to perhaps 4 or 5 watches to represent a cross section of more interesting (to me) pieces that I can actually wear on a daily basis.
My first thoughts are to keep an Omega X33 (a fairly modern quartz classic), a Fortis Cosmonaut and a JLC Memovox (classic mechanical alarms), and a Bulova ‘Royal Oak’ (because I like it), with maybe a Citizen Ecodrive for everyday use.




The rest will have to go onto the Sales Corner over the next year or so (in view of the limit on sales frequency) or on Chrono 24 (as there seems to be low demand for mechanical alarms on TZ).
I have thoroughly enjoyed collecting my watches over the years and would love to hear how others have faced this issue and your thoughts on my ‘Keepers’.
